Launched 1st February 2024, the Deposit Return Scheme is a circular economy initiative that aims to preserve valuable resources and reduce landfill.
How does it work?
The Deposit Return Scheme requires a small deposit to be paid when purchasing plastic bottles or cans that are made of aluminium or steel. The deposit will be paid back in full, either in cents or store credit, once the undamaged bottles or cans have been returned to the store after consumption. By offering an initiative for recycling, it promotes a sense of collective responsibility for environmental care. Thus, aiding the fight toward a more sustainable future.
It’s crucial that recycling efficiency is continuously supported. Therefore, to maximise public visibility, cans and bottles made of aluminium or steel will display the Return logo in stores, making it clear which items are eligible for the scheme. Adhering to this scheme will also contribute to the Single Use Plastics Directive’s goal of ensuring that 77% of all plastic bottles are recycled by 2025.
